|03/26/2019 - 2:20pm||We are "western" college…||
We are "western" college hockey fans, and there's a regional difference here. Many eastern teams, especially the ones with small fanbases, are fine with the regional system. They're fine with it because they can play close to home. Allentown is five hours from Boston. It is closer to Providence than it is to any western team that actually made the NCAA tournament (the only "western" team that is closer in any event is host Penn State, I believe).?
Eastern teams are fine with this arrangement because they always, always have two regionals that they could attend that are less than a 3-hour drive from each other. Eastern fans know that if their team makes the tournament, they will probably be two hours or less from attending the game.?
Minnesota State-Mankato fans (and UMD fans and Northern Michigan fans and Bowling Green fans and now fans of teams like Michigan and Wisconsin) almost never have an opportunity to attend a regional close to home, because even in the increasingly infrequent year where one is close, the chance of getting shipped somewhere else is extremely high.?
The net effect is that western fans have increasingly learned that attending NCAA tournament hockey games is something to assume they will not be able to do. They are trained to stay home.?
When regionals have been played at home sites, there have been fairness concerns (and, look, Providence gets what is essentially a home game). But the atmospheres have been great. The three regionals hosted by Yost are some of the greatest sporting events Michigan has ever participated in.?
Not every home tournament game will be so exciting. But many will. Fans of teams will have an opportunity to watch a do-or-die game and cheer on their team. When the road team pulls the upset, they get the pleasure of shutting up an actual crowd, instead of simply enjoying the silence of an empty arena.
The regional system exists because a subset of eastern and small schools find it benefits them. But it harms the sport, and is grossly unfair to the entire western region. Its persistence in the face of perpetual, continual failure is a clear demonstration that the hockey competition committee doesn't care about the fans or the health of the sport.?

|03/25/2019 - 3:37pm||A lot of good discussion on…||
A lot of good discussion on this sub thread.?
Here’s the thing: timing affects the quality of shots, but generally only with regard to the shot clock or the end of the game.?
The reason Poole taking a step-back 3 is a bad shot is because Poole isn’t good at taking them. The reason the catch-and-shoot 3 Brian highlighted was a good shot is because it was open and is a shot he is good at making.?
If Poole hit 40% of his step back 3s we’d be delighted with them. If he hit 28-footers at 40% nobody would complain about them. James Harden and Steph Curry take those shots, and because they are so good at making them, no one complains.?
But Poole does not shoot remotely that well. He is much better on the line taking somewhat open catch-and-shoots. The other shots are bad unless (and this happened at least once) it’s late in the clock and there are no other options.?
If Poole hits 20% of his step-backs, they are bad shots. The one shot out of five that goes in is still a bad shot.?

|03/24/2019 - 11:29pm||Good points. But remember…||
Good points. But remember that Michigan also hung .81 on... Iowa. Michigan is quite capable of struggling, badly, on offense. Things have leveled off a bit, but those offensive funks are still there.
So a team that can really grind down Michigan's offense is a real worry for me. I believe Michigan's defense will be somewhat effective against almost anybody, but the periodic inability to score consistently when it's really needed is a serious achilles heel. That's what killed us, basically, in all three games against MSU.?
And that's where Jarrett Culver comes in. Against MSU, we faced a playmaker who was able to do enough to keep his offense moving when Michigan's stopped. In Culver, Texas Tech has a playmaker who can, potentially, make the plays necessary to get that handful of baskets late to put them over the top.
I don't expect him to explode or anything; he's going to draw Matthews, and that will be brutal. But he doesn't have to dominate or even be particularly efficient--just a couple of baskets in crunch time as part of a 16-points-on-18-shots type day can be enough if Jordan Poole is chucking bricks from the March Madness logo.?

Those two wins over Duke, even without Zion, aren't nothing.?
But their region, like ours, is pretty tough. That Auburn game is a real challenge, and (probably) Kentucky is in there if they get past that. That's a tough lineup for a one seed, particularly in contrast to the path that, say, Virginia has to the regional final.?

If nobody but Charles Matthews leaves, this team is loaded next season. #1 seed, national title, all of it well within reach.
But I live in Minnesota. Seeing Michigan in the Final Four would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.?
Let's do it this year. And if the guys wanna come back and do it again next year, that's fine with me.?
|03/23/2019 - 11:57pm||To say that Brooks was…||
To say that Brooks was struggling with his shooting midseason would be incredibly kind. Brooks had Rick Ankiel-level yips in his shooting. He was terrified of taking shots and would miss badly when he took them. The critical discussion happened for a reason, and Beilein agreed because DDJ was the first off the bench several times late in the year.?
Brooks still isn't a big contributor on offense. But he remains very consistent on defense, and that's why he got such a long leash early in the year and why he is playing now. The team is every bit as good on defense when he is on the floor.?
I have no idea what the rotation will look like next season at guard, but this year Brooks is important because of defense.

His offense was a disaster.?
His defense is every bit as good as Poole and not a terrible step down from X, and has been all season. The team is statistically just as good on D with him in the game, and that’s why he kept getting the call.?
Old 98/Maizen insisted that he didn’t belong in the B1G, and he could easily be third string next year here, but he’s found ways to contribute.?

Cal is actually pretty good at getting his 5-stars to learn and play together as the season goes on; they are, typically, significantly improved by the end of the season.
But complaining about it is rich. He's targeting these guys, beating teams that are offering hundreds of thousands of dollars for them, and promising them quality NBA development. It is who he is. It's fine except for the cheating part, but don't pretend it's some great burden.?

What's really important is that Michigan won.
This falls into the "well, that's nice" category.
Also in that category: Zion Williamson scored 25 and looks like he could do that for five more games. What's more relevant to me is that if he averages 25 for six games (I'd like them to play, at most, five) he'll be lauded as a tournament great... and finish 34 short of Glen Rice.?

Maaaybe. But "better" doesn't mean, "better at beating MSU." MSU last year was completely flummoxed by Syracuse's zone, and Tom Izzo decided to ground his lottery pick on the bench for some reason.?
MSU knows exactly who Minnesota is and what they do. No secrets there. There is no reason for them not to demolish Minnesota like an abandoned building.

|03/22/2019 - 1:38am||Going to be a tough game…||
Going to be a tough game Saturday, but who are we kidding: They're all tough.
Simpson's 4 turnovers were a big story in the first half, but perhaps not as much as one would think: I've noticed that Simpson occasionally has trouble feeding the lane for a post or a cutter when he can't get an angle outside of the defense. He's been known to clang bounce passes off of legs and hips.?
It's not a huge issue, but his lack of size means he sometimes has to try to thread things that larger guys could wrap. I suspect this is part of the reason that we can't always take advantage of mismatches on Teske in the post (a large part of the reason is that Beilein isn't a post-up guy). Later on Simpson was going with high feeds, which got Teske the ball but were a bit nervous and didn't always leave an opportunity for Teske to score.
This was as routine as a tournament game gets, though. It was actually weird at tip-off thinking, "hey, this could be the last time the team plays." Because once that was out of the way this felt like a game played in December.?
Man, it's really awesome that we can get "used" to early tournament wins.?
|03/22/2019 - 12:51am||First, it's Izzo, one of the…||
First, it's Izzo, one of the longest-tenured coaches in the sport, who has seen immense success. Second, he still maintains a pretty good public image in the media, which tends not to focus on things like hushing up rape allegations, so when he publicly does things contrary to that image, it's newsworthy.?
Third, it's being talked about nationally because it's the NCAA tournament, which gets a lot of attention. And it's getting talked about here because people here are frustrated by the issue described in item 2--Izzo isn't this great leader of a clean, ethical program doing things the "right way," at least not the way the media portrays it, and a lot of people here are tired of him getting a pass for it.
PS: I got stuck with a typo on mobile, which autocorrected "lunge" to "lungs." I've edited my comment, but your response here ("with the lungs and the finger-wagging") accurately quoted my post at the time.?
|03/22/2019 - 12:31am||Correct. Single digits or…||
Correct. Single digits or other significant numbers are not lightly thrown around. A QB changing from 3 to 5 is nothing (and I think the OP is right, Milton had that number before). But a guy switching from, say, 7 to 41 raises some eyebrows.?

|03/22/2019 - 12:07am||The stick here is that this…||
The stick here is that this is getting some national attention. I know the Seth Davis studio crew spent five minutes on it; one person argued that this is a bit understandable because Tom allows his other players to yell back at him (as they did in this instance). But a couple of others basically said that this went beyond yelling, which they can understand, and into inappropriate territory with the lunge?and the finger-wagging.?
I’m glad to see this get some national attention.?

I haven't seen that much Morant, but I don't think his game is that similar. He isn't nearly as athletic--Westbrook attacking in transition is a truly singular phenomenon--but he's a better distributor and takes smarter shots. When Marquette was keeping in front of him he wasn't scoring much in the first half, but he was racking up the assists.?
He has huge usage and is still reasonably efficient. But he's playing with an Ohio Valley-level team, there's a lot of room for him to spread it out when he plays with more talent.?
He does need to improve his 3-point shooting, though, only about 33% this year.?

|03/21/2019 - 5:43pm||The problem with those clock…||
The problem with those clock-bleeding possessions is that a good college basketball offense operates by providing multiple options for passing and ballhandling as the offense cycles through its picks and passes. When you hold like that to the end you wind up running one play that has to work or you have no alternative options.
Clock-bleeding stuff is at least logical if you have a lead or are working to get the last shot at the end of a half--removing scoring opportunities for the opponent is good--but when you're behind I think you need to run some offense and accept the possibility that a good offensive look will result in a lead you have to defend for a few seconds.?
